Rhino Route Tour Itinerary
Traveling inland through the stunning Valley of a Thousand Hills to Underberg, we leave Durban behind to spend some time taking in the sensational scenery of the Ukhahlamba - Drakensberg World Heritage Site. Walking trails, San rock art sites, horse riding, canoeing and river tubing are only some of the optional activities available. Hodgesons Peaks creates an awesome backdrop as we gaze at the amazing Giants Cup.
The mountain Kingdom of Lesotho, a small landlocked country with its own border crossing, can be seen as we ascend Sani Pass. Considered the highest pass in South Africa, it rises to an altitude of 2865 metres. Hoping to spot the endangered lammergaier (bearded vulture) in the distance, we view some of the most spectacular scenery in Africa. Visiting the wholesome mountain people in the Basotho village gives us the opportunity to experience their way of life and culture. We enjoy a leisurely lunch at the highest pub in Africa before we make our decent down the Pass.
The evening's accommodation overlooking the Amphitheatre, a spectacular 8km stretch of cliff from where the Tugela Falls drop a sheer 850 metres in 5 different stages, is situated in the northern part of the Drakensberg mountain range. We can either explore San rock art sites with a trained custodian, take a walk in the gorge or swim in the fresh mountain streams.
We reach the small town of Dundee after a leisurely drive. Situated on the site of the first Anglo-Boer War of 1899, we visit the Talana History Museum. Learning quite a bit about the history of a region that has withheld many secrets, we view the large collection of war memorabilia. Amongst those who roamed this magnificent African landscape where war upon war was fought we come across some famous names from history including Winston Churchilll, Mahatma Ghandi and King Shaka. Boasting the biggest concentration of Battlefields in Africa, we visit the Anglo-Zulu Battlefields at Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift, made famous by the Michael Caine movie "Zulu".
Hluhluwe, being one of the oldest game reserves in Africa, was once the hunting preserves of the old Zulu Kings and was proclaimed a Nature Reserve in 1895. Well known for bringing the white rhino back from the brink of extinction, the park is home to "Operation Rhino". A linking corridor, allowing animals free movement over 96 000 hectares, connects Hluhluwe to Umfolozi Game reserve where we spend the night. These reserves are home to a huge variety of African animals and includes the "Big 5": lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.
The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park protects five interconnected eco-systems and was granted UNESCO World Heritage Status in 1999. The estuary boasts nearly 2000 crocodiles, 800 hippo and 40 pairs of the African fish eagle and we get a chance to see them as we take an afternoon hippo cruise. Be introduced to some of the customs, traditions and culture of the Amazulu, the People of Heaven, as we visit a traditional Zulu Village where they perform an energetic dance.
Our journey ends in Durban after our final drive through the amazing hills of sugar cane. Durban, known as the city of sunshine and smiles with its Golden Mile of beaches, offers a host of shopping and outdoor attractions.
