Tanzanian Travels Tour Itinerary
Day 1 - Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar Island
Leaving the palm-lined port of Dar es Salaam, we cross by ferry to Zanzibar, the “Spice Island” and home to Swahili culture. The island offers a fascinating fusion of African and Arab languages and customs. Stone Town is the old city and the cultural heart of Zanzibar. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab palaces. With its unique architecture, brass-studded, carved wooden doors, bazaars and markets, it echoes the Arabian nights. Visit the spice plantations and be dazzled by the sheer number of spices produced. Immerse yourself in the history of slavery during a visit to the slave pits, a stark reminder of the darker side of the island’s history.
For the next 2 days we enjoy the spectacular beaches of the north with optional activities such as snorkeling or diving in the Indian Ocean, a dolphin viewing cruise, relax with a book on the white sand or sip cocktails while the sun sets. Magic!
Dar es Salaam means “Abode of Peace” and we return there by ferry. Dar (as it is affectionately called), is a bustling seaport that straddles some of the most important sea routes on earth.
Today we travel inland to Lushoto situated at the foot of the Usamabara Mountains. This beautiful, lush area is in contrast to Tanzania’s Game Parks and cities. Farmers cultivate small plots on the fertile slopes while not far away large areas of land are still covered by dense tropical forests.
Mount Kilimanjaro is generally shrouded in cloud but sometimes displays its summit. Hopefully we catch more than that on our way to Arusha. Arusha is a vibrant town situated in the shadow of Mount Meru and is where we start our excursion into the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater.
With a local operator, we explore the plains of the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. The Serengeti is famous for the annual migrations of wildebeest and zebra as well as being one of the best known wildlife sanctuaries in the world. We then continue via Olduvai Gorge, (commonly known as "The Cradle of Mankind"), to the World Heritage Site - Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Ngorongoro Crater probably has the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa and is undoubtedly the best place to see black rhino and prides of lion. Our tour finishes on arrival in Arusha.
*Depending on the group size you might have one crew member showing you Namibia's highlights. This tour is designed for those aged over 50.
