He called it the citadel of the South and burned it. Margaret Mitchell didn't agree. She wrote a book about it. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. didn't agree. He called it home. President Jimmy Carter didn't agree. He located his Library and Center for World Peace here. CNN's Ted Turner didn't agree. He founded his empire here.

Atlanta Singles Getaway Vacation Daily Itinerary

Atlanta AtlantaVacation Day 1 – Atlanta, Georgia

Arrive at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and make your way to the group's hotel, the Hampton Inn and Suites Atlanta Downtown. Take a taxi or shuttle or if you are very adventurous you might try the MARTA train to the Peachtree Center Station which is about three blocks from our hotel.

Tonight meet and greet with your local Atlanta tour leader and fellow single travelers then walk to a restaurant for a bite to eat.

Vacation Day 2 – Discover Atlanta

Today we see Atlanta with our knowledgable local guide. First we travel north for a drive through one of Atlanta's most prestigious neighborhoods - Buckhead. The Governor's Mansion is located here - and it is NOT the largest house on the block. Then sit back and relax on our whirlwind tour of the city.

Atlanta MLKSee favorites like the gold-domed State Capitol and the grand old Fox Theater. Check out Atlantic Station, Atlanta's hot new 'city within the city'and travel with us to an earlier Atlanta with a visit to Inman Park with its beautifully restored Victorian architecture. We will pause at the Martin Luther King Historic District to visit his tombstone and museum, as well as the old Ebenezer Baptist Church and the National Parks Civil Rights building.

We'll take a look at Centennial Olympic Park, Atlanta's best legacy from the 1996 Olympic Games. See the dancing waters of the Five Rings Fountain and the Commemorative Bricks. Learn the stories of the '96 Games and the Memorial Quilt Plazas. You can’t miss the Georgia Aquarium, the largest in the United States! The World of Coca Cola is right next door.

Atlanta world coca colaThis afternoon we will take in the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca Cola at our leisure.

The Aquarium is home to over 100,000 animals living in more than eight million gallons of water. Don’t miss the star attractions - the whale sharks! The beluga whales and penguins are neat, too. Atlanta and Coca-Cola have grown up together. This is a fun tour that takes a look at the history of this southern born soft drink. Founded by Asa Candler in 1891 as a local headache remedy, today, Coke is sold in 160 countries around the world and consumed more than 448 million times a day. Get closer than ever before to the vault containing the Secret Formula. Be sure to stop by the tasting room for samples of Coke’s 60 international products. It’s the real thing!

When we have completed the tour of the World of Coca Cola we will have a short walk back to our hotel. Time to relax before you meet the group for dinner.

Atlanta cycloramaVacation Day 3 – “Searching for Scarlett”. Is she gone with the wind?

We set the stage with a visit to the Cyclorama. Experience for yourself a day in that long ago Civil War Battle of Atlanta, July 22, 1864. Presented as a three-dimensional panorama with music and narration, this largest oil painting in the world captures the drama that took place in Atlanta during America's tragic Civil War.

Our next stop is The Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, this is the apartment where she lived with her husband when she wrote, Gone With The Wind. It will surprise you. Remember - this is the birthplace of THE BOOK that made possible the movie that premiered here in Atlanta in 1939, grossed $14 million the first year and received a record 10 Academy Awards. It all started right here on Peachtree Street in a tiny little apartment dubbed "The Dump" by a tiny little woman named Margaret Mitchell Upshaw Marsh.

Atlanta GWTW houseAfter lunch experience Southern hospitality first hand at the Atlanta History Center. See the 1860’s Smith family farm and the 1928 Swan House with its 22 acres of beautiful gardens and trails. Then we depart for Marietta, and the “Gone With the Wind” museum.

The rustle of petticoats.

The smell of gunpowder.

Cotton fields and plantations.

Step back in time with the sights and sounds of Atlanta during the Civil War and Reconstruction as told through the eyes of Scarlett O'Hara and her dashing romancer, Rhett Butler. The Gone with the Wind Museum with its an extensive collection of memorabilia and Scarlett on the Square is sure to delight and intrigue any fan from novice to aficionado. We will choose from the many excellent eating places here where to have dinner

Vacation Day 4 – Atlanta At Leisure

Atlanta cnn studio tourToday is a free day to explore on your own and here are some options using your City Pass. Take the Inside CNN Studio Tour, and visit either the High Museum of Art or Fernbank Museum of Natural History. Or just explore downtown Atlanta, now that you know your way around.

A farewell dinner tonight is at Pitty Pat’s Porch, a short walk from our hotel. We may as well see what happened to one of Scarlett’s relatives. The story is told that when Scarlett visited Atlanta she always stayed with Aunt Pittypat. During those visits, Aunty Pitty would prepare only her best recipes. At Pittypat's Porch, the tradition continues...
