Ecuador with Amazon Twist Singles Vacation Daily Itinerary
Quito City
Vacation Day 1: Arrive Quito
Plan to arrive in Quito, Ecuador today and take the provided shuttle to our hotel. To give everyone a chance to arrive no activities are planned.
Tonight meet your hostess in our hotel lobby at 7:00pm for an optional dinner.

Vacation Day 2: Quito - Amazoonico Animal Rescue Center - Yacuma Jungle EcoLodge
Amazoonico This morning we depart the city, Quito for the Amazon jungle. Along the way we visit the Amazoonico Animal Rescue Center, near Tano Ecuador. Its primary goal is to try to rehabilitate every animal that comes through its doors and help it return to the wild. There we'll see monkeys roaming free, ocelots, boas, tapirs,... and many other animals.
From here, we will drive approximately one and a half hours until we reach the community of San Pedro de Sumino, a small jungle town located on the banks of the Napo River, one of the main streams of the great Napo Napo Riverdeep into the Yacuma Natural Reserve. A 20-30 minute ride will take us to the small Chontayacu River, where Yacuma EcoLodge is located. The Yacuma Forest Reserve totals 275 hectares of Primary rainforest, bordering the Chontayacu River next to the cabins, and going deep into the jungle surrounding the cabins. This natural heaven will be our home for the next few days, as we explore and connect with nature and the communities of the jungle.
yacuma ecolodgeAt the lodge, we will be welcomed with a glass of a traditional beverage with lots of caffeine and vitamins called “Guayusa”, and a short talk. Next check-out our comfortable traditional style bungalows, solar panels provide hot water in the showers and ambient lighting for the night.
After checking-out our rooms, enjoy a short walk to the “hidden Lagoon”, for bird watching. See the birds, such as: King Fishers, Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, and perhaps one of the strangest birds of the Amazon, the Hoatzin, with their blue faces and punk-hairdo. We will also try fishing for the legendary Piranha, which we can enjoy for dinner, if you can catch one! Then we head back to camp and have a nice bonfire with music after dinner.

Vacation Day 3: Yacuma EcoLodge and the Forest Reserve
cotococha6After a nice hearty breakfast we will hike deep in the primary jungle of the Yacuma forest reserve. Take your choice of two alternatives.
The first is a short 2 hour walk in which our native guide will show us various species of birds, medicinal plants and their usage in shamanic healing rituals, and if we are lucky animals such as monkeys, tapirs, or capybaras.
The second is a 3 hour jungle hike across the beautiful amazon landscapes and into a beautiful waterfall. As we ascend through difficult and complex jungle terrain, we should hear the amazing calls of the “Oropendola” bird. Hike through the secondary and primary forest, viewing species of tree life that is very useful for the communities.
Kichwa ChontayacuWe will return to our lodge for a delicious, locally produced lunch and after a short rest, we will visit the home of one of the members of the Kichwa Chontayacu community to appreciate their simple and calm lifestyle. During our walk, learn interact and observe the various crops that grow within the jungle of secondary forests of The Napo Basin, like coffee, bananas, cacao, cassava, papaya, pineapple and oranges. There will be an opportunity to buy local handicrafts such as vases, small pots, necklaces and bracelets. The traditional Chicha drink will also be explained and passed around to try.
Then it is back to the lodge for dinner, and if anyone feels up for a 40 minute night walk it can be arranged after dinner.

Vacation Day 4: Yacuma EcoLodge and the Forest Reserve
tubingImagine floating downstream on the great Napo River on a tube or panning for gold in the stream, today we get to do both. Tubing down the river lets us take our time as we meander past the banks of the Amazon rainforest and see the plants and animals that make their home on the river’s shore. To pan for gold, we put our pans in the water and gently swirl the dirt inside to get rid of the silt and wash off the rocks.  As the rocks are cleaned, sweep them out of the pan. wash what remains again and again, looking for anything that might look like gold. The gold comes down from the mountain as minuscule flecks and is easy to miss.
blow gunThis fun activity will be followed by lunch and a lesson in the usage of the blow gun. With a few basic techniques, we can learn how to shoot one just like the ancient tribes, it requires more than just sticking a dart in the end and blowing. Then we will get to produce a very fresh and high quality cup of hot chocolate using locally grown cacao pods.
Tonight enjoy a nice farewell dinner and a bonfire to relax by.

Vacation Day 5: Yacuma EcoLodge - Quito
Oropendola BirdFor those interested in bird watching, an early start is offered to catch the different species of bird life rising for the day. At 5:30 am we will go up to the viewpoint close to the lodge to observe the jungle come alive. An impressive view of the amazon jungle from the same levels of the canopy is also very grand from this location. We will return to the lodge and meet those who chose to sleep for breakfast.
We will say goodbye to Yacuma after breakfast, and we will board our canoe to go back to San Pedro de Sumino. From here and with the help of our guide we will travel back to Quito and continue with our Ecuador adventure.

Vacation Day 6: Quito City Tour - Middle of the Earth
Middle of the WorldAfter breakfast we begin our tour of Quito, the perfect city for seeing fascinating panoramas, churches, domes and roofs that are history relics. Quito, the capital of Ecuador, was founded in the 16th century on the ruins of an Inca city and stands at an altitude of 9.350 feet. Despite the 1917 earthquake, the city has the best-preserved, least altered historic Centre in Latin America. The architecture and rich interiors, are pure examples of the ' School of Quito', which is a fusion of Spanish, Italian, Moorish, Flemish and indigenous art. After exploring the Old Town, we'll understand why Quito was the world's first city named to UNESCO's Cultural Heritage list.
quito old town nightThis afternoon we travel northwest of Quito to an amazing “Middle of the World” experience. Visit the current equatorial line and straddle two hemispheres at the same time. In addition have a chance to watch water go down the drain in a different direction only inches away from either side of the equator, or balance an egg on a nail, or use an ancient sun dial.
Tonight we enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Vacation Day 7: Quito - Otavalo - Quito- Farewell Dinner
Otavalo marketToday we travel north to a valley deep within the Andes to the world famous Otavalo Indian market. Saturday is market day and the town is crowded with traditional dressed locals and people from surrounding highland villages. Everyone is busy bargaining for traditional Ecuadorian crafts, weavings and textiles. Warm jackets, woven bags, pillow covers and wall hangings are great souvenirs. Woodcarving, musical instruments and jewelry are also popular.
In the afternoon, visit Cotacachi, famous for its handcrafted leather articles. If time allows, the adventure ends with a visit to beautiful Cuicocha Lake, a flooded volcanic crater with two floating islets, before returning to Quito.
Tonight enjoy our farewell dinner at a local-flavor restaurant.
